Most of us believe that any kind of creative act benefits the universe… in an important but nebulous, unquantifiable way. But here is a lovely instance of a writer directly dedicating her work to the public good: Providence poet Kate Schapira is helping raise funds for public libraries in areas hit badly by this summer’s drought.

She’s writing rain dance poems over at this site and asking people to contribute a little money for particular libraries in the midwest. In just three days, she raised $235 raised for the McDonald County Library System. And this week, she’s raising money (and writing rain poems for) the Bedford Public Library in Bedford, Indiana.

So please– Help us help Kate by passing on news of her project to other writers and library-lovers in your life.
